There is an alternative to SfM the Kinect Calibration Toolbox for Matlab. The advantage is that id does not need images from IR camera. This way the capturing of the calibration image set can be fully automated.

According to Jan Smisek's measurements the accuracy of the output from the Openni driver is very similar to output from libfreenect after his calibration. This fact probably makes the calibration of the Xtion unnecessary.
